HBO has just announced a new show and it is making the politically correctness police go hog wild. From the creators of the hit show, “Game of Thrones” comes a new HBO drama titled “Confederate.” Members of the public have flown into an outrage after learning the title of the show and what it will depict. And HBO has been forced to react out of “respect” for the “dialogue and concern” of the offended people. But instead of pulling the program from the air, the executives at HBO stand by the show’s creators’ vision.
Although HBO has respect for the offended people and has offered to open up a “dialogue” to discuss the issues at hand, the creator of #OscarsSoWhite, April Reign, has gotten another hashtag going that targets the new show.
“Confederate” depicts what would have happened if the South had won the Civil War and seceded from the Union. The show depicts a life where slavery is still practiced in the South. And ever since HBO has announced the project two weeks ago, it has been the source of vehement outrage from the public. And HBO has been forced to rebuke the latest hashtag campaign.
The show comes from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of the popular “Game of Thrones” series. It is executive produced by Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcolm Spellman.
“We have great respect for the dialogue and concern being expressed around ‘Confederate,'” HBO said in a statement to CNN. “We have faith that Nichelle, Dan, David and Malcolm will approach the subject with care and sensitivity. The project is currently in its infancy so we hope that people will reserve judgment until there is something to see.”
Meanwhile, Reign has began her anti-Confederate campaign with the hashtag #NoConfederate, which is trending on social media. Her goal is to get HBO to cancel its plan to air the series.
Because Benioff and Weiss are the leaders of “Game of Thrones,” Reign tried to get the hashtag trending during the airing of Sunday’s latest episode.
“We would like HBO to cancel #Confederate and instead uplift more marginalized voices with a different series,” Reign told CNN in an email.
Critics of HBO claim the show’s premise is harmful to democracy and civil rights. They claim the show will only incite the ongoing racial and political tensions in the country right now.
Reign added, “the premise of the show itself is without merit.”
She continued by saying:
“The commodification of Black pain for the enjoyment of others must stop,” Reign told CNN in an e-mail Friday. “Earlier this month, there were protests about taking down Confederate monuments. The prison industrial complex is bursting with Black and brown people, disproportionate to the crimes committed. So, for some, Confederate is not ‘alternate history,’ but a painful and recent reminder of how much further we still need to go for true equality in this country.”
Do you think HBO should air the show about a South that won the Civil War?
